INAKOS Officially Relaunched: A New Milestone for Korean Studies in Indonesia

Yogyakarta, Indonesia — The International Association for Korean Studies in Indonesia (INAKOS) was officially relaunched on 29 November 2025 after a period of inactivity that began during the pandemic. Established on 7 May 2009, the organization serves as a platform for developing research and various academic activities related to Korean Studies in a more structured and sustainable manner.

Supported by the Korea Foundation (KF) and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Indonesia, the relaunch event featured a seminar held at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). This event is part of broader efforts to strengthen academic, cultural, and policy networks under the framework of the K-Initiative, a public diplomacy policy of the Korean government.

The Meaning Behind the Relaunch of Korean Studies in Indonesia

Public interest in Korea continues to grow rapidly in Indonesia, ranging from K-dramas, K-Pop, webtoons, and gaming to the beauty industry. As a result, demand for Korean language learning and academic engagement with Korean Studies has increased significantly in recent years. The relaunch of INAKOS is expected to consolidate this momentum into a more established academic ecosystem.

INAKOS does not focus solely on language and culture; it also encompasses contemporary issues such as politics, history, economics, international relations, cultural industries, technology, and gender studies. This multidisciplinary approach aligns with ongoing efforts to position Korea not only as a center of popular culture, but also as a global knowledge partner.

Academic Seminar

The relaunch seminar carried the theme “Strengthening the Korean Studies Ecosystem and the Role of Institutions.” The program opened with a keynote address titled “The Past and Future of Korean Studies in Indonesia: Directions for Sustainable Development” delivered by Suray Agung Nugroho, Ph.D., President of INAKOS.

The relaunch of INAKOS is expected to serve as a foundation for building a nationwide network of Korean Studies researchers, publishing internationally standardized academic journals, developing educational and training programs, fostering inter-university and institutional research collaborations, and initiating joint projects in both academic and cultural fields.

The Korea Foundation expressed its readiness to provide concrete support, ranging from global research networks and academic exchange programs to publication initiatives and research collaborations. Moving forward, the Korea Foundation and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Indonesia will expand their support to ensure that synergy among academia, education, and policy can further strengthen knowledge-based public diplomacy.
