Friday, May 12, 2023 – UGM Korean Language and Culture Study Program won first place in the 2023 Korean Language Debate Competition for D3 / S1 students throughout Indonesia by KCCI (2023년 인도네시아 대학생 한국어 토론대회).

On March 2, 2023, through the official website of Korea Culture Center Indonesia (KCCI – http://id.korean- culture.org), KCCI announced the “Student Debate in Korean in 2023” competition. Unlike the previous competition, this competition is open to all students from different majors if they could communicate in Korean. The UGM Korean Language and Culture Study Program was able to qualify a debate team for the preliminary round, consisting of two students from the Class of 2020, Vanesa Olivia and Raihana Alfiyya R. A. They named their team Igong Dugong (이공두공).

The preliminary round was held online through the Zoom webinar platform on May 5, 2023. This round was attended by students from UGM, UPI, UI, STAN and UNPAD. The theme of the preliminary round was “한국어 학습 시만을 사용하는 것이 학습 과정을 극대화하는데 더 효과적이다”. Team Igong Dugong (이공두공) from UGM was the agree (pro) team representative, beating Team Byeolttungbyeol (별똥별) from UPI. They qualified along with 3 other teams for the semifinals, which were held live in Jakarta at CGV, FX Sudirman Mall.

Furthermore, the semi-final round was held on Friday, May 12, 2023. The theme for this round was “코로나19 팬데믹 기간에 보편화된 재택근무와 비대면 수업을 코로나19 상황이 완화되었는데도 계속할 필요가 있는가? Team Igong Dugong (이공두공) represented the counter team against Team Pureun Nancho (푸른난초) from the University of Indonesia. After explaining some of their opinions during the debate, Team Igong Dugong (이공두공) regained the victory and advanced to the final round held the same day.

In the final round, Team Igong Dugong (이공두공) as representative of agree (pro) team took on Team Jaegi (제기) to discuss the debate topic “K-Pop 아이돌로 데뷔하기 위하여 청소기년기부터 엄격한 훈련을 받는 것이 바람한가? The competition started at 16:00 on the same day (02/13). The Igong Dugong (이공두공) team successfully presented their opinion based on concrete evidence rather than personal opinion. Based on the judges’ scores, Team Igong Dugong (이공두공) won 대상 or first place in this competition.

Here are Raihanna and Vanesa’s impressions and messages:

“I feel very honored to be able to represent UGM, especially the Korean Language and Culture program, to participate in the Korean Language Debating Competition in Jakarta. Alhamdulillah, our team won the first place in this competition. Of course, this cannot be separated from the support and prayers of family, faculty, seniors and friends.

“At first we were insecure because the opposing team was no less good, but we tried our best by preparing the material and practicing before the competition.”

“I didn’t expect to qualify until the semifinals, let alone win first place.
For friends and hoobae, don’t be afraid to join the competition because as long as we try and pray, God will give us the best!”

Spirit and good luck ♡

Raihanna (2020)

“To be able to represent the UGM Korean Language and Culture Study Program and receive Daesang is an honor. Actually, I was inferior because all the participants were cool, but Alhamdulillah, with the permission of Allah SWT, I was able to bring home Daesang. Of course, all of this cannot be separated from the prayers and support of family, UGM Korean Language and Culture Study Program instructors, friends, and sunbaenim and hubaenim. For friends, there’s nothing wrong with trying, and don’t be afraid to fail, the important thing is to gain experience. Cheer up!”

Vanesa (2020)

Of course, this competition once again proved that the ability of UGM Korean Language and Culture Study Program students is very great and qualified, as they managed to beat dozens of participants from various universities in Indonesia who registered. Hopefully there will be more achievements of UGM Korean Language and Culture Study Program students in the future!

Once again, we congratulate Raihanna and Vanesa for achieving national level achievements and bringing the good name of UGM Korean Language and Culture Study Program!
^^
