March 18, 2023 ㅡ Korean Language and Culture Student Association (HIMAHARA) held the first work program of its cabinet, ARIYA cabinet, in cooperation with Sejong Haktang on Saturday (18/3) at Margono Building Room 303, Faculty of Cultural Sciences. The event was held with the aim of introducing Korean mask dance culture (탈춤) to the general public.

The first activity began with a presentation of materials on Korean masks by Ms. Alfiana, a lecturer in the Korean Language and Culture program, starting with a brief history, types and characteristics of masks, and ending with an explanation of Korean mask dance (탈춤).

After the presentation of the material, the activity continued with a quiz. The enthusiasm of the participants in answering the questions really created a good atmosphere and showed that the material presented was well received and listened to by the participants.

In addition to explaining the material about Korean masks, the participants were also given the opportunity to decorate Korean masks. Each participant was given materials in the form of a mask, clay, and black rope. The time allotted for decorating the mask was approximately 40 minutes. Prizes were given to the 10 best and most creative decorators. All participants enthusiastically expressed their creativity by decorating the masks.

Isn’t it fun? The activity of introducing the mask dance culture, packaged in the form of theoretical presentations, decorating practices and watching live performances, proves that the objectives of this activity were well achieved. Participants gained new knowledge and experience of Korean culture and were able to take home their decorated masks as gifts to display at home.
