Yogyakarta, February 23–24, 2025 – The Korean Language and Culture Study Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), in collaboration with PELBAKORI (Association of Korean Language Training Institutions in Indonesia), organized a seminar and workshop titled “The Role of PELBAKORI Instructors in Preparing Prospective Indonesian Migrant Workers for South Korea as National Ambassadors.” The event took place at the Gadjah Mada University Club (UC) Hotel and was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers, PELBAKORI leadership, the Dean and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB UGM), Korean language and culture lecturers, and instructors from Korean language training institutions across Indonesia. The primary goal of the event was to enhance the skills and knowledge of participants preparing to work in South Korea.

The seminar began with an opening ceremony that included the singing of the Indonesian national anthem, followed by a prayer. A spirited atmosphere filled the room as attendees were treated to a captivating performance of the Korean fan dance Buchaechum, presented by students from the Korean Language and Culture Study Program. This mesmerizing performance not only showcased the beauty of Korean culture but also set a positive tone for the day’s activities.

Following the performance, welcoming remarks were delivered by the seminar committee chair, the Chairperson of PELBAKORI, the Dean of FIB UGM, and the Director General of Overseas Employment Promotion and Utilization. Each speaker emphasized the importance of education and cultural exchange in fostering mutual understanding between nations and in preparing Indonesian workers to represent their country effectively in South Korea.

The seminar featured presentations from various speakers who offered valuable insights. Mr. Didin Samsudin spoke about Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI), especially those headed to South Korea, highlighting their role as national ambassadors. He was followed by Mr. Suray Agung Nugroho, who presented the latest 2024 edition of the EPS TOPIK content. The seminar continued with a presentation by Ms. Hwang Who Young, who discussed teaching methods for Korean culture, particularly within the EPS TOPIK framework.

After the seminar session, participants took a short break before engaging in a practical workshop focused on Korean language instruction. Led by experienced lecturers from the Korean Language and Culture Study Program, the workshop aimed to provide practical language skills. The content from the updated EPS TOPIK book was designed to be directly applicable for instructors teaching at their respective training institutions. The workshop continued through February 24, offering participants extended opportunities to deepen their language skills and cultural understanding.

This two-day event not only equipped participants with essential tools for their future pursuits but also fostered a sense of unity among those interested in working in South Korea. The seminar and workshop, hosted by the Korean Language and Culture Study Program at UGM and PELBAKORI, reflect a deep commitment to cultural diversity and education in building global partnerships. By preparing Indonesian workers to serve as national ambassadors, this initiative contributes to a more interconnected world where cultural understanding and collaboration can flourish.
