Public Lecture on Korean Culture

Yogyakarta, March 8, 2024 – A public lecture on Korean culture was held successfully at the Auditorium of the Soegondo building, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University. This public lecture was held because of cooperation among UGM Korean Language and Culture Study Program, Korean Cultural Center Indonesia (KCCI), Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) Indonesia, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea. The series of events opened at 13.00 Western Indonesian time with the inauguration of the ‘Korean Culture Njogo’ team by the director of the Korean Cultural Center Indonesia (KCCI), Mr. Kim Yong Woon.

Then, the event continued with the opening of the MC and the performance of Samulnori (a team of Korean traditional musical instrument players). After that, the audience was asked to stand up to sing the national anthem of Indonesia and the Republic of Korea. After then, the lecture opened with a speech by the director of the Korean Cultural Center Indonesia (KCCI), Mr. Kim Yong Woon.
This public lecture is divided into three sessions. The first session was delivered by a lecturer from the Korean Language and Culture Study Program, Mr. Suray Agung Nugroho, S.S., M.A., Ph, D. with the title “Hallyu Now and in the Future”. In this session, the content presented was related to the history and development of Hallyu in Indonesia until it could become what it is today, as well as the opportunity for Hallyu to develop in the future. The second session was continued by Mrs. Dwita Rizki who translated Korean literature books. In accordance with her profession, Mrs. Dwita Rizki delivered material about translating Korean literary books with the title “Meeting Translators of Korean Literary Books”. She conveyed her experience as a translator of Korean literary books, from the beginning to become a translator, to tips for becoming a professional translator. Then, the lecture session closed with the third speaker, Mr. Kim Young Soo as director of Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) Indonesia. The material presented was entitled “Hallyu in the World, the Leader of the Creative Economy (Focusing on the case of KOREA 360)”. In this session, the role of Hallyu in the creative economy in the world was conveyed. In addition, he also conveyed material about KOREA 360 which is a product from the KOCCA as a tool to introduce Hallyu to the world through creative content.

After the lecture session was finished, participants had a question and answer session. In addition to questions, the KCCI and the KOCCA conducted quizzes for participants. As a form of appreciation, the KCCI and the KOCCA gave prizes to the questioners and participants who successfully answered the quiz questions.
